HOLLYWOOD, FL – The City of Hollywood remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and anticipates tropical storm force winds along with heavy rains will be affecting our area by late morning Sunday. The City of Hollywood’s Emergency Management team is working in conjunction with Broward County Emergency Management to closely monitor the development of the storm. The National Hurricane Center is currently forecasting the storm to strengthen to Category 1 hurricane Sunday morning, with the center of circulation in the Florida Straits.

The City of Hollywood is celebrating National Marina Day on June 9 at the Hollywood Marina, 700 Polk Street in Hollywood by hosting a free boating safety and information event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Hollywood Police Department, International Game Fishing Association, and others who will inform the public about boating security, rules and regulations, boat mechanics, and other marine-related topics. Sailing demonstrations by the Gulfstream Sailing Club and a rock-climbing wall will be available for children, and the Hollydogs Greyhound Rescue will operate a donation-based dog wash station.

HOLLYWOOD, FL – The winners of the City of Hollywood’s Inaugural Great Neighborhoods Challenge will be announced during an award celebration Monday, May 21 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center, 2030 Polk Street in Hollywood. Three neighborhoods in the City of Hollywood will be awarded $25,000 public space improvement grants for recruiting at least 25 property owners in their area to fix up their properties and for developing an award-winning design to improve a public area in their neighborhood. The City of Hollywood also will announce the first ($2,500), second ($1,000), and third-place ($500) Private Space Entry winners, as well as ten honorable mentions ($100 home improvement gift cards) in each of the seven neighborhoods that qualified for prize money. Entrants whose neighborhoods did not meet the minimum number of entries to receive prize money were combined into an “at-large” category and will also be eligible for cash prizes.

On Sunday, May 13, 2012 a 55 gallon drum washed ashore on Hollywood Beach. The drum was transported to the City of Hollywood Public Works Beach Maintenance Facility located at 1112 North Ocean Drive. This morning, crews called in the City of Hollywood Fire/Rescue Hazardous Materials Team to determine whether the contents of the drum are hazardous. Due to early evidence of a potentially hazardous substance, the Hollywood Police Department is detouring all traffic in this area. Southbound traffic on A1A is being turned around at Minnesota Street and detoured back to Sheridan Street. Northbound traffic is being detoured east to Surf Road at Indiana Street and then back to A1A at Minnesota Street.

The ArtsPark at Young Circle gallery will open a unique exhibition called “Universal Xplosion of Heart” featuring Haitian artist Roland “Rojmeck” Mecklembourg from May 15 to August 17. Universal Xplosion of Heart will feature nearly 40 pieces of artwork by Mecklembourg, including his highly regarded “When Sky meets Earth Series,” which contains portraits as well as recent paintings. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, May 19 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the ArtsPark at Young Circle located on Hollywood Boulevard and US-1.

On April 27, 2012, the Hollywood Police Department responded to a suspicious incident at 1838 Funston Street, Apartment No. 1. A caller notified the Hollywood Police Department that he could hear a child crying inside the apartment. Officers responded and heard a child crying inside the unit. After no one answered the door, the officers gained entry into the apartment and discovered an 11-month-old female alone in the residence.
